DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATORS
Developmental Educators, or DEs, are qualified professionals specialising in disability. Developmental Educators Australia Inc (DEAI) represents the unique and dynamic profession of Developmental Education.
Recognised as allied health professionals, DEs can assist with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
DEs are skilled professionals who collaborate with individuals, their families, communities, and existing support networks to help achieve goals. DEs possess expertise in various disability-related areas, acquired through a professional practice degree focused on disability studies. This includes understanding disabilities, effective support strategies, legal and ethical considerations, and practical skills for working with individuals with disabilities.
DEs work under a scope of practice and code of ethics and practice to maintain a high standard.
DEs are multi-disciplinary professionals who take a holistic approach to supporting individuals with disabilities. DEs focus on promoting health, well-being, and functional capacity through tailored strategies and interventions that encourage independence and quality of life. DEs often collaborate with other professionals to ensure a comprehensive, team-based approach that addresses the unique needs of each individual. While DEs focus is on practical, person-centered strategies, DEs do not diagnose or treat health or mental health conditions. Instead, DEs provide essential support through strategies that enhance functional skills and community participation.
DEs work with people with disability to promote inclusion and address attitudinal and environmental barriers using a diverse set of professional and technical skills. This includes applying developmental, behavioural, learning, and social theories; assessing individuals and their environments; engaging in collaborative planning and goal setting; teaching skills through evidence-based strategies; supporting life transitions; and performing programming, monitoring, and evaluation. Additionally, DEs are involved in advocacy; community education; and capacity building.
DEs deliver specialised services focused on societal contribution, emphasising individual strengths and employing a holistic, person-centred approach guided by a human rights framework. DEs promote inclusion, support people with disability, and use innovative and creative approaches while adhering to best practices.
DEs are also able to undertake assessments.
Professional Association
