ANIMAL-ASSISTED THERAPY

Chunky | Dwarf Goat | Montrose Hills

Therapy Space on the Farm

At Montrose Hills Therapy | Developmental Education, our Developmental Educator offers Animal-Assisted Therapy in the serene, non-clinical environment of the Therapy Space on the Farm in Conway, Whitsundays.

Through animal-assisted therapy, participants engage with horses and other farm animals, guided by a professionally qualified Developmental Educator to support their therapeutic needs.

By integrating horses and farm animals into the therapeutic process, creates an engaging environment that supports emotional regulation, social skills development, and overall well-being.

The Therapy Space on the Farm offers a holistic experience, where the presence of animals enhances well-being in a positive and safe environment. Participants engage in activities that support, improve or maintain their functional capacity in areas such as language, movement, interpersonal interactions and functioning.

The Farm Experience

At the farm, therapists specialise in groundwork with non-ridden horses, recognised for their exceptional communication skills. Developmental Educators utilises horses as valuable resources in therapy due to their natural sensitivity, which allows them to mirror human emotions and provide immediate, honest feedback.

During therapy sessions, interactions with horses and farm animals promote functional skills such as:

  • Building Trust and Relationships: Enhancing interpersonal connections

  • Communication Skills: Encouraging verbal and non-verbal exchanges

  • Emotional Regulation: Assisting in managing and expressing feelings

  • Empathy: Developing the ability to understand and share the feelings of others

  • Fine and Gross Motor Skills: Developing coordination and physical abilities

  • Patience and Confidence: Encouraging self-assurance and perseverance

  • Boundaries and Problem-Solving: Learning to navigate personal limits and challenges

  • Body awareness and Planning: Promoting a sense of physical presence and strategic thinking

  • Team building: Encouraging collaboration and cooperation

  • Self-efficacy: Empowering people to believe in their capabilities

Safety and Suitability Assessments

All horses and farm animals undergo safety and suitability assessments. Participants complete evaluations with their therapists before engaging with the animals, ensuring the safety and well-being of both the participant and animals throughout the session.
